JPD: Texting Possible Factor In July 15 Accident

Police are investigating whether the driver was posting text messages at the time of the accident.

The 23-year-old Connecticut woman who died following a July 15 accident on Hartford Avenue may have been using her cell phone to send text messages at the time of the crash, Capt. Daniel Parrillo said during an interview on July 19.

Parrillo also confirmed that speed was a factor in the collision that led to the death of Katlyn Reid, 23, of Manchester, Conn., and noted that Reid was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident.

“There was a text on the phone close to the time of the accident,” explained Parrillo. “There was some sort of a texting conversation taking place before the accident.”

Parrillo said local police are investigating if that was a possible factor in the collision.

The accident occurred at 11:30 p.m. on Friday night when Reid's vehicle crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. Her 2000 Honda Accord struck a Subaru Forester driven by a 48-year old Pawtucket woman. Both drivers were taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.

Reid died early Saturday morning. The Pawtucket woman was released from the hospital Sunday night after suffering non-life threatening injuries, according to Parrillo.

Parillo said police are seeking witnesses to the accident. Anyone with information should call the Johnston Police Department at (401) 231-4210.
