JPD Issues Report On Carnevale Incident

Following the indictment of state Rep. John M. Carnevale (D-Providence, Johnston) on Oct. 28, the Johnston Police Department released its report on the alleged sexual assault committed by the retired Providence police sergeant.

According to the report, the victim went to police headquarters on Aug. 1 to report that Carnevale, 50, of 150 Barber St., Providence, went to her home on July 28 at about midnight. The victim told police that Carnevale tried to make sexual advances toward her and attempted to have sex with her, but she resisted. Carnevale then allegedly masturbated, before throwing a $20 bill at the victim.

The victim said she did not report the incident sooner because she has a special needs child and "did not want to upset him," according to Det. Anthony Sasso.

She also reportedly told police that she was afraid of Carnevale, whom she has known for many years and with whom she said "she has never had any sort of sexual or intimate relationship," Ptlm. Jared DeAngelis wrote in his report.

On Aug. 2, Carnevale reported to police headquarters with his attorney, William Dimitri, and declined to make a statement. Police read him his rights and took a DNA swab, then sent it to the state crime lab, which later found that the swab matched DNA found at the victim's home following the alleged assault.

Johnston Police then turned the case over to the Rhode Island Attorney General.

Carnevale is due for arraignment on the felony charges on Nov. 16.

Earlier today, the Providence Journal reported that Carnevale, through Dimitri, denied the charges.
