Johnston Police Nab Smithfield Domestic Assault Suspect

A local officer stopped the car driven by James Whiting because it had a cracked windshield.

A cracked windshield led to the May 29 arrest of a West Warwick man by Johnston Police on a warrant issued by Smithfield Police.

James Whiting, 66, faces charges of domestic assault and domestic disorderly conduct after Johnston Ptlm. Luca Lancellotti saw Whiting's car traveling on Killingly Street at about 11 am.

Lancellotti reported seeing a crack in the car's windshield, and stopped the car on Greenville Avenue.

A check of Whiting's identity returned the active warrant, and Lancellotti reported that he arrested Whiting without incident. He also issued Whiting a citation for the cracked windshield.

Smithfield Patrol Ofc. Scott Hopkins responded to the Johnston Police Department to take custody of Whiting later that day.

Whiting pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Third District Court, and was released on personal recognizance until a June 11 hearing. A no-contact order was also imposed.
