Johnston Police Log: Tree Falls on Car

The following reports were provided by the Johnston Police Department. Where an arrest is noted, it does not indicate a conviction.

Tree falls on car:

Johnston Police Ptlm. John DeAngelis reported that he responded to Cherry Hill Road at Old Cherry Hill Road on Oct. 14 at about 3 pm for a fallen tree in the roadway.

After placing his cruiser to block traffic and diverting cars to Old Cherry Hill Road, DeAngelis wrote that he spoke with Toni Achilli, 26, of Jasmine Lane, whose car had been struck by the tree.

Achilli said she was driving her 2009 Ford Escape eastbound on Cherry Hill when she saw the tree falling and tried to drive under it.

The tree hit the windshield and roof of the truck, causing minor damage, DeAngelis reported.

Expired license arrest:

Ptlm. Ryan Lemieux reported that he and three other officers responded to Putnam Avenue and Angell Avenue at about 5:30 am on Oct. 13 for a man slumped over in his vehicle.

Lemieux said when they arrived, officers found the 2001 Toyota Supra "half in the roadway" on Angell Avenue. The car was running, and the gear shift had been left in Neutral.

The driver, identified as Ronny Solares, 31, of 15 Greenwood St., Providence, said he had been driving from a friend's house "and was tired," noted Lemieux, who also reported that he smelled "a slight odor" of alcohol from Solares.

Lemieux reported that he then administered field sobriety tests on Solares, who passed them.

A check of Solares's identification showed that he did not have an active driver's license, Lemieux reported, and officers charged him with one count of driving without a license before bringing him home.

Solares has a scheduled hearing on Oct. 24 in Third District Court, Warwick.
