Johnston 13th in FBI Crime Stats

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently released its 2012 crime statistics.

Johnston ended up slightly above mid-pack in a recent survey of violent crime in Rhode Island during 2012, according to an FBI report on Rhode Island violent crime.

Among Johnston's 28,742 residents, the local police department reported 38 instances of violent crime, along with 531 property crimes and 109 burglaries reported for that year. There were also 363 reports of theft.

The FBI data put Johnston at number 13 out of 37 communities in the state according to a GoLocalProv.com post, behind Cranston at number 10 and North Providence at number 9.

During 2012, Johnston reported one murder, for which Donald Greenslit is serving a life sentence.

A jury convicted Greenslit in the January, 2012, killing of Stacie Dorego at a home in Johnston.

Police and fire crews rescued two young children from the Pershing Street house where Greenslit tried to burn Dorego's remains in a fireplace, which caused enough smoke for neighbors to call authorities.
