Salvatore Gelsomino

The Johnston resident and Army veteran of World War II passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012.

 

Salvatore Gelsomino, 88, of Johnston, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Carmela (Rocchio) Gelsomino. Born in Lawrence, MA, he was the son of the late Michele and Gelsomina (DeGennaro) Gelsomino.

Sal was a Builder and the owner and operator of Modern Building Company. He was a 40 year member and served 2 terms as President of the Johnston Lions Club and was the Director of the RI Lions Sight Foundation, serving 3 terms as President. With the help of the International Foundation, he was able to oversee the donation of large print books to all public libaries in RI. He also served 4 years as Chairman of the Green Acres Commission for the Town of Johnston.
He was an Army Veteran of WWII serving in the African and European Theater.

He leaves a son, Michael Gelsomino and his wife Carol of Johnston; a daughter, Barbara Gelsomino of Dallas, Texas and three grandchildren., Eric, Andrew and Alex Gelsomino. He was the brother of the late Guido and Louis Gelsomino, Dora Zarli and Anita Salvatore.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 10 a.m. in , Atwood Ave., Johnston. Visitation respectfully omitted.

Burial with Military Honors will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Johnston Lions Scholarship Foundation, c/o Doug Jeffrey, Box 19131, Johnston, RI 02919.
