Gear Up for the 2013 Woony River Ride

The annual fundraising bike ride is scheduled for Sept. 21 starting in Providence.

Bikers from near and far are expected to take part in the 2013 Woony River Ride, set for Sept. 21.

The largest fundraiser of the year for the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, the ride features four routes, with two of them taking in the scenery along the Woonasquatucket in Johnston and other surrounding communities.

This year, the WRWC is offering a military discount for members of the armed forces, lowering the registration cost to $20 for individuals and $30 for families.

Regular registration fees are $30 per person and $40 for families.

And for riders who raise certain amounts, there's a variety of prizes available, including fashionable fish helmet covers for $100, $250, and $500 levels, plus gondola rides in Providence, WRWC sweatshirts designed by Eric Delin of Delin Designs, memberships to Crossfit Providence, ceramic mugs my David Allyn, and bike accessories from Via Velo.

All routes begin and end at Waterplace Park in downtown Providence. Riders should get to the start point 30 minutes before their ride begins.

Parking is available at One Citizens Plaza.

The schedule for riders is:

• 9 a.m.: 50-mi. ride [including a rest stop at Georgiaville Pond in Smithfield]
• 10:30 a.m.: 27-mi. ride [including travel through Johnston]
• 11:30 a.m.: 10-mi. ride
• 12 p.m.: 5-mi. ride/walk

From 1 to 4 p.m., the Watershed Council is scheduled to hold its post-ride party, including lunch, music, and prizes.
