Thousands In Johnston In The Dark

High, gusty winds are expected through the afternoon, and the number of downed power lines continues to grow.

More than 6,000 Johnston residents are estimated to be without power this afternoon as high winds from Tropical Storm Irene continue throughout the day.

The outages are spread throughout the town, rather than concentrated in one area, according to National Grid's website. Residents can search their neighborhoods on a map to find out where power is on and where the lights are off.

Across the state more than 150,000 people are without electricty, a number that continues to grow. Tree limbs continue to fall in the gusty winds, knocking down power lines. Officials are asking residents to remain off the road due to hazardous conditions, and to allow easy access for emergency and electricity crews.
