Judge Orders Liquidation for Foundering Fire District

Superior Court Judge Brian P. Stern ruled during a hearing Friday that the Central Coventry Fire District must be liquidated. 

District Chief Andy Baynes and Special Master Richard Land had already shut down three of the district's five stations effective at 8 a.m. Friday in an attempt to cut costs.

American Bulldog Kills Portsmouth Dog in Attack

A small Lhasa Apso dog was killed Sunday night while being walked on Fox Run Road, according to Portsmouth police.

Woman Charged With DUI Said She Just Wanted to Cuddle with the Lazy Man

A Newport woman was charged with driving under the influence after she allegedly got into an accident with two other vehicles early Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported. 

When police asked if she was injured, she allegedly responded “You have to understand, I just want to cuddle.”  She also stated that she was okay, but she was "in a place that she shouldn’t be," said police.  

Pope Francis's Famous Easter Hug? The Boy's From Johnston

The photo from Easter Sunday that became emblematic of Pope Francis's personal touch featured the new pontiff holding a disabled boy in his arms. It turns out the boy, 8-year-old Dominic Gondreau, is from Johnston.

Man Arrested After Trying to Fill Prescription at CVS

Donald Condon, 37, 63 Berkley Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested on March 29 at 3:45 p.m. and charged with making a false report to obtain a controlled substance, or trying to pass a fraudulent prescription; and driving on a suspended license. He was also wanted on a bench warrant from Second Division District Court for failure to appear.

URI on Lockdown; Gunman Reported on Campus

Reports of a gunman on campus led officials to locak down the University of Rhode Island for several hours Thursday. Reports of a weapon on campus turned out to be untrue.

Friday, April 5

Middletown Police Decline to Charge Teacher

The Middletown Police Department has concluded its investigation into a potential relationship between 39-year-old Patrick Aylward, a teacher at Middletown High School, and a 17-year-old female student, saying they have not found sufficient evidence to charge the teacher.

Police were investigating a possible third degree sexual assault.
