TELL US: Should Licensed Gun Owners' Information be Public?

If you are licensed to own a gun, would you want your name and address publicized?

A news publication in New York is under scrutiny for publishing the names and addresses of gun owners in certain parts of the state.

Less than two weeks after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., the New York Journal News earlier this week published the names and addresses of local gun owners in three New York counties.

A story titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," highlights the names and addresses of residents who are licensed to own handguns through Freedom of Information Law requests, according to The Huffington Post

The Journal News reportedly requested the information from New York's Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, though the publication was only able to obtain the names and addresses of those who have a license to own a handgun.

The move has drawn considerable criticism from readers, some of whom claim the article has put those named in danger, as they could expose law enforcement officials who are licensed to own guns.

What do you think, should Johnston gun owners' information be pulic? Should the Journal News have published that information? Or has this compromised the privacy and safety of those individuals who are licensed to own guns? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Absolutely not. Exposing this information would only benefit the criminals who would attempt to rob people who have legally owned guns and get them into the hands of other criminals. This is a no brain er. Unfortunately there are those who continue to attempt a legal harassment of law abiding citizens because they feel that the American Public shouldn't own guns. First of all, guns, in the hands of responsible gun owners have prevented more crimes and injuries that most Police Departments. During a break in, if you can get to a phone and call the Police it will still take them minutes to respond to your home. The criminal would be gone and maybe you will be injured, or worse, before the Police get there. They may eventually get the criminal but they may not. Our founding fathers fought oppression in England, then here in the colonies, and put their lives on the line to break away from the tyranny that oppressed a FREE MAN. They also knew that arming the public was a sure way to prevent it from happening here. During WW ll, I believe it was Hirohito, was asked about a land invasion of the USA. His reply was that it would be nearly impossible because there would be a gun behind every rock. Guns have made this Country strong, the courts have continued to put the criminals back on the street, so we need to protect ourselves and not expose where we have the guns stored.
