READER ROUNDUP: Burn Trash For Energy

Check out a sampling of reader comments on Patch sites throughout the region.

Johnston: "In these days of Solar Panels and Windmills for the generation of Electricity in our State facillities why are we still covering our trash with dirt and making mountains hundreds of feet high? Other Cities in the US and around the world are using Plasma Arc technology to vaporize tons of trash daily while making power for their areas... The time has come to stop using the Landfill as a bury for cash operation. Lets start worrying about health instead of wealth." — Joseph McCauly, commenting on New Landfill Commission To Meet At JHS

Coventry: "WOW! Mr. Zulega serves as an inspiration for all!!" — Jim Gamelin, commenting on Fred Zuleger: THE Running Man of Coventry

Cranston: "People of Cranston, this is why our taxes are what they are, because we keep telling businesses to go somewhere else and tell them when they can open and close" — Jeffrey Barone

"The decision made by the Safety Services Committee not to grant a 24 hour license was the correct decision. This decision not only protects the neighborhood but also sends a message to the other box stores in Cranston." — John E. Lanni, Jr., both commenting on Committee Rejects Walmart's 24-hour Request

East Greenwich: "It’s not the cheese sandwich. You could be giving a steak and cheese sandwich. The point is that the school committee is punishing the children for the sins of the parents and of the school lunch system. I find that unnecessary. If the system worked better we would all be notified ahead of time, but I can assure you that is not the case. I know for a fact that notices do not go out consistently and that students have been charged for meals that they have not purchased." — E.G. Resident

"Oh please. Do those of you opposed to this really think the kids are shamed and humiliated? Are they made to sit at the cheese sandwich table wearing a cheesehead hat? Watch how well this system works when little Johnny comes home and tells mom he had to have a cheese sandwich and not the pizza he wanted. I'm gonna guess funds are gonna make their way onto the card pronto." — EG Lurker, both commenting on New Lunch Policy: The Cheese Sandwich Alternative

Narragansett: "This ordinance is a best practice in dealing with underage drinkning parties and unruly gatherings ... The ordinance should serve as one more deterrent to holding disturbing and dangerous gatherings that effect the quality of life in our community." — Nancy Arnold Devaney.

"This ordinance is poorly thought out and indicative of the shoddy work ... The Council is just trying to gear up for the election to show they care about the situation and have responded to it. It is a terribly bad piece of ambiguous crap and should be tossed out." — Debra Puleo, both commenting on Council Approves Ordinance to Recoup Nuisance Costs

North Kingstown: "I like this plan. Very elegant thinking, serving many diverse needs/priorities." — Ed Renehan, commenting on Planning Commission OKs New Schartner Development

South Kingstown: "I don't mind Christmas music at the parties leading up to Christmas Day, and I usually start listening on the radio about a week before Christmas. Any earlier, and they just aren't as special to me." — Jim Weinreich, commenting on Poll: Holiday Music: Too Much Or Never Enough?

Woonsocket: "The tree at your house is whatever you want to call it (I casually call mine a Christmas Tree even though I'm not particularly religious), but the ones on state-owned, public property NEED to be called something that does not come close to endorsing a particular religious belief ... hence "Holiday Tree." It's the right thing to do. It upholds a foundational principle of our country (separation of church and state), and I applaud any public servant who endorses the practice." — EssaySea, commenting on Locals Join Protest of Holiday Tree
