Mixed Bag In Johnston During First Snow Of Fall

The western side of the town received more snow than the eastern region, Chief of Staff Doug Jeffrey said.

Varying amounts of snow fell in Johnston, with the western region of town near the Scituate border getting more, and the eastern portion near Providence getting less, Chief of Staff Doug Jeffrey said in a telephone interview this morning.

"It seemed that the town was on a line in the storm — if you were on the west, you'd think we were getting a blizzard [but] over near , it wasn't that bad," Jeffrey explained.

At least one accident in the western part of town was attributed to the leftover snow. Sgt. Matthew LeDuc reported that a car rolled over on Peck Hill Road at about 8:15 a.m.

LeDuc said the driver was not injured, and reported that his car "slid in the slushy conditions."

Although it was a fairly minor storm, Jeffrey said the first snow of the fall presented its own challenges for local crews.

"We had five or six trees down that we had remove to clear the roadway," he explained. "We also had to remove snow from the roads — this was a borderline storm where you've got to err on the side of caution."

The heavy snow also caused a small number of power outages, mainly along Bishop Hill Road, according to the National Grid Outage Central website.

Town plows were out during the night to clear local roads, said Jeffrey, adding that public works crews may go out tonight to spread sand on the streets.

"There's a possibility of [the snow] melting and freezing overnight," he explained. "[DPW Maintenance Supt.] Arnie Vecchione is watching the temperature carefully in making that decision."
