UPDATE: Johnston Substation Repaired; Electricity Back on in Town

Update, Monday 1:45 pm – According to the National Grid, the two substations that were knocked out this morning are now back up and running. With the substations back online, power has been restored to thousands of customers throughout the state. At the height of the power outage, nearly 14,000 households were without power.

Monday's thunderstorms left 14,000 customers across the state — including nearly 2,000 in Johnston — without power, and two substations were knocked out, according to the Providence Journal.

National Grid announced just before 2 pm that the company had restored the two substations, one in Johnston and another in Barrington. The former of the two serves a large section of Providence. Earlier Monday morning, the State House was evacuated after a power surge set off a fire alarm.

The hardest hit area was Barrington, where 4,700 of the town's 6,810 customers were left without power after the substation failure. In Providence, 4,265 were powerless with another 1,943 in Johnston and 1,864 in North Providence.
