FBI Took DNA Sample From Bombing Suspect's Widow

Federal officials took a DNA sample from Katherine Russell after female DNA was found on one of the bombs.

FBI agents left the North Kingstown home of Katherine Russell – wife of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects – Monday with several bags and DNA samples, according to the New York Times.

As part of its investigation, the FBI is looking to determine whether or not female DNA found on one of the pressure cookers used as an explosive device in the bombing is that of Tamerlan Tsarnaev's wife, Katherine Russell. The Boston Globe reports that the DNA could belong to a retail clerk who sold some of the bomb materials, a spectator at the marathon or another possible source.

Officials also said that a fingerprint was found on a bomb fragment and they are collecting DNA and fingerprint simples from several people, including Russell.

Authorities are investigating whether or not Russell, who had been married to Tsarnaev since 2010, could have wittingly or unwittingly "destroyed evidence, helped the bombers evade capture or even played a role in planning the attacks," said the NY Times. Russell's attorneys say that Russell had no knowledge of her husband and brother-in-law's terror plot and was "shocked" by the news.

since federal authorities identified her husband as one of the bombing suspects. He was killed during a getaway attempt from police on the same day.
