Cranston's Olivia Culpo Crowned Miss Universe

Olivia Culpo, who is from Cranston, represented Rhode Island in the Miss USA pageant in June and now conquers the world.

Cranston's own Olivia Culpo has another crown to put next to her Miss USA crown: Miss Universe.

Culpo, who won the Miss USA title in June, is a Cranston native.

She's the first USA woman to win the title since 1997, beating 88 other contestants from around the world at the pageant in Las Vegas.

In an interview during the show, Culpo said one thing people might not know about her is "I'm really easy going."

"Any joke — I'll get it. A lot of time, people think of beauty queens almost being plastic. I can take jokes. I can take anything," she said.

In the evening gown competition, Culpo wore a long, red flowing dress with revealing cleavage. Host Guliana Rancic said she was "certainly a mermaid," and "looks like a jewel."

She had a little stumble, but regained her footing. "A true mark of a queen," Rancic said.

In the interview portion of the competition, Culpo was asked: what is something you have done that you'd never do again?

Her answer: picking on my siblings growing up.

As the winner, Culpo will receive an undisclosed salary, a new wardrobe and an apartment in New York City.

She'll soon be traveling around the world fulfilling her duties as Miss Universe.
