Week In Review: New Fire Chief Soon; Changes To JHS Programs; Lady Panthers Finish Season

Fire Chief Selection Nears: Johnston could have a new fire chief as soon as two weeks from now, though Chief of Staff Doug Jeffrey said a month is the more likely timeframe for selection of a replacement for Andrew J. Baynes, who resigned in January.

JHS Curriculum Changes: Principal Gerald K. Foley proposed a set of changes to the program of studies at Johnston High School, to begin in September, at the school committee meeting on March 8. The board approved Foley's recommendations — which include community service for school credit and new Advanced Placement courses — by a 4-0 vote. The board also approved a plan to seek bids for regional bus services with as-yet undetermined communities in the area.

Flood Mitigation Plan: On March 8, esidents had a chance to on the , a $28 million project that would pay for removal of 12 homes and installation of flood protection measures.

Lady Panthers Finish Season: After a strong regular season and finishing second in Division II North, the varsity girls' basketball team advanced to the semifinals in the state tournament before falling to The Prout School in their Final Four matchup on March 9.

Athletic Hall Of Fame: Nearly 140 alumni of Johnston High School will be honored for their athletic achievements at the inaugural Hall of Fame ceremony, scheduled for June 17. Co-Athletic Director Gary Mazzie has been compiling a list of every All-State athlete in JHS history, dating back to 1963.
