Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI issued the following advice on preventing the flu:

  • Get a flu shot.  This is the easiest and best way to protect yourself and your family.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often throughout the day with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before preparing food, after blowing your nose, or if you’re caring for a sick person.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the crook of your elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing—not with your hands.
  • Stay home. Going to work or school when you are ill puts others at risk for the flu and increases the chances that they may pass it onto others.
