Death of the Ding-Dong, Twinkie, Wonder Bread: Hostess to Close

Reports are that Hostess is starting to close down after a labor dispute. End of a beloved era, or good riddance to junk food heaven?

Twinkies. Hostess Cupcakes. Wonder Bread. Ding-Dongs.

They will be gone forever, with reports that Hostess Brands, Inc.will sell off or close down its 82-year old business. Done in, the CEO claims, by labor union action.

Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

The company has been challenged by not only by snarly labor relations, and a national strike by its second-largest labor union, but also, posits the Wall Street Journal, by consumers switching to healthier foods and high ingredient costs.

One caveat: The Journal says that Hostess has threatened liquidation before, and not followed through.

The move puts 18,500 workers out of their jobs, CNN reports.

What do you think about this end to a junk-food kingdom?

I am old enough to remember the Brown&Sharpe strike in the early 80's. So many people lost so much. For what?? Was it worth it?? Some say that was a bad strike...move on and forget about it. Really... I guess we will be doomed to repeat history because we will not learn from it

I remember that strike. Brown & Sharpe still exists. The difference is people like eating Hostess products. I saw where a Mexican company called Bimbo is interested in the company.

Yup the Unions might have been one of the problems but as usual the companies Exes were giving themselves raises of up 80% basically LOOTING Hostess that was already in Chapter 11

When you go for a job it's no one's business what the employer makes and what he pays others who work in other capacities. Don't take a job and than put demands on the company that will drive it out of business. The unions in this town, state, federal government and across the board don't give a damn about this country, their members and even less so for the children of their members. To them taxpayers are now like Twinkies
