5 Things: Cool Contests, Spirit Week, New Works

There's still time to upload your photos in our Halloween contests — read all about it, plus more, in the 5 Things to Know Today for Oct. 23.

1. Cool Contests: Think your Halloween pumpkin or costume is the best? Enter our contests:

  • Pumpkin Decorating: Post your decorated pumpkins here and enter to win a gift card in the Rhode Island Patch contest.
  • Best Costume in America: Have a great costume? Upload your photo here and see if yours is named the best in all of Patchland. Winner scores $5,000.

2. Spirit Week: Johnston High School continues its lead-up to Saturday's Homecoming events with Hick/Hillbilly dress-up day for students — or, as we knew it back in '89, "How 50 percent of JHS students dressed." For the young'ins at the high school today, ask your parents about "the grunge look."

3. New Works: Be the first to hear the latest literary creations by local authors at tonight's New Works Night at Mohr Library, One Memorial Ave. Scheduled to start at 6 pm.

4. Shopping: Before you head out to Super Stop & Shop [or another local supermarket], make sure to check the new JohnstonPatch Groceries page for the best deals and online coupons.

5. Weather in 10 Words: Sunny early, then clouding up. Chance of rain through tomorrow.
