Week In Review: Fire At Car Dealership, Busy Week For JHS B-Ball Teams

A look at the top stories from JohnstonPatch for the week ending Feb. 11.

Fire At Metro Collision: Employees of the Metrol Collision Center on Putnam Pike evacuated the facility after a blaze broke out in the paint hood. No injuries were reported. Investigators told Johnston Police that a faulty gas-fired heater was apparently to blame.

Basketball Squads Face Tough Schedules: Because of prior school cancellations, the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Johnston High School had packed schedules this week.

  • The boys team started the stretch with two wins, including a 68-46 trouncing of Mt. Hope on Feb. 6 and a convincing victory over Burrillville on Senior Night, Feb. 8, which also featured recognition for Isaac Medeiros on his nomination to the McDonald's All-American team (alas, he did not secure on of the 24 slots on the team). The good results didn't last, though, as the Panthers fell to East Greenwich on Feb. 10.
  • The Lady Panthers wound up with three games in three nights, and finished with a 2-1 record, including a tough 54-52 loss to Burrillville; a 53-41 win over Scituate, and a decisive 50-33 victory in a rematch against Central Falls on Friday night. Coach Dan Mazzulla announced his retirement at halftime on Feb. 11.

J-DAPA Takes The Stage: The Johnston Drama and Performing Arts troupe scheduled three performances, including two set for Thursday and Friday this week. Tickets to Thursday's show are just $5.

Maselli Sentenced: Former state Sen. Christopher Maselli, who admitted to eight counts of federal bank fraud, was sentenced to 27 months in prison on Thursday, He had requested one day of incarceration.

Local Alum Heads To Egypt: Just as the demonstrations in Egypt against President Hosni Mubarak reached their peak Thursday and Friday, 2005 Johnsotn High School graduate Nabil Samuel was on his way to his home country. Just before he departed, JohnstonPatch chatted with him about his perspective on the events in Egypt. Mubarak subsequently resigned from office.
