Cinco De Mayo And More On Tap This Weekend

Cinco De Mayo, Rent, the RI Philharmonic, and a movie about an angry tire highlight this weekend's choices.

There are plenty of concerts, plays, movies, and musicals to keep you entertained all weekend long. Sit back, relax, and let the planning begin!

  • This Thursday, celebrate Cinco De Mayo at Bar 101 in Johnston. There are several drink specials, like $4 Margaritas, along with entertainment by Kevin Herchen
  • t will have Mariachi music and specialty margaritas to celebrate Cinco De Mayo
  • Music fans might want to check out Lupo's this weekend. On Friday, May 6th, The Deftones and The Dillinger Escape plan will be playing an 8:30 p.m. show. Tickets are $29.50 in advance. The following night, Interpol visits for a 9 p.m. show.  Tickets are $20 in advance.
  • On Saturday, May 7th, the "Rhode Island Philharmonic Presents: Mahler" will be held at Veteran's Memorial Audotorium with Mezzo-soprano Susan Platts (Tony Soprano couldn't make it). Tickets start at $39.
  • This Friday, Thor makes its big debut on movie screens throughout the country. This tale based on Norse mythology focuses on a warrior sent down to Earth as punishment, but who then tries to redeem himself. Thor, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Stellan Skarsgard.  It will be showing at Providence Place Cinemas, Cinema World at Lincoln Mall, and other local theaters.
  • Perishable Theater has performances of 1:23 this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a second show on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Perishable Theatre's website, or by calling the box office at 401-331-2695 extension 101.
  • Rock veterans Kansas perform at the Twin River Event Center Friday at 8:30 p,m. Tickets start at $25, and it's an all ages show. Just a guess, but I don't think there'll be too many patrons from the under-18 crowd.
  • If you're tired of the same formulaic Hollywood movies, then I have a film for you! Rubber, is the story of an abandoned tire that suddenly comes to life and gains telepathic powers, which are used to wreak havoc. This is not your typical "tire"d Hollywood story line! Rubber will be showing at the cable Car Cinema in Providence this Thursday at 8:45 p.m. You can check out the trailer at www.rubberthemovie.com.
  • The Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket will have three performances of the musical Rent. Show times are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $19.
