5 Things To Know Today: March 8

Help 6 local schools raise Pennies For Patients; story hour and book discussion at Mohr; two blood drives in the area; public skating in Smithfield; and today in history: Before there was Vista — long before there was Vista.

Pennies For Patients: If you have a student in a Johnston elementary school, you already know about it — if you don't, here's the deal: the kids are participating in the "Pennies for Patients" drive to benefit the Rhode Island Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The drive started yesterday and continues through March 27. Forget those big green machines in the supermarket; donate your loose change to a worthy cause.

Mohr Programs: Marian J. Mohr Library hosts story hour for infants to three-year-olds starting at 10:30 a.m. Later in the day, at 3:30 p.m., the library's Reading Room is open for book discussion. Today's reading selection is The Summer We Read Gatsby by Danielle Ganek. The group will also be discussing The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.
