5 Things To Know Today: March 31

Library programs in the area, now that Mohr is closed; blood drive in North Providence; Johnston Tea Party meeting; public hockey in Smithfield; and today in history: let me stand next to this fire.

Don't Panic: Mohr Library is closed until April 9 (expected constant reminders of the grand opening of the new facility — fair warning), and we'll keep you updated with events and activities at area libraries. Here are a few from Cranston:

  • for 2s and 3s at Cranston Central Library, 10-10:30 a.m.
  • for infants to 2-year-olds at William Hall Free Library, 11 a.m. to noon
  • for kids 9 and up at Hall Library, 3:30-4:40 p.m.

And don't forget that you can order books and download MP3 audio books from the Ocean State Libraries E-Zone website. You can pick up your order at any area library (and pay your fines while you're there, ya scofflaw).

Today's Blood Drive: Walgreen's on Miserable Spring — I mean, Mineral Spring (though have you ever driven it at 2 p.m., like, any day of the week?) — in North Providence will host the Rhode Island Blood Center's Bloodmobile from 4 to 7 p.m.

Johnston Tea Party: Yes, Johnston actually has a local chapter (we recently), and it's scheduled to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at Ribs & Company.

Goons And Snipers Welcome: But play clean, guys. Smithfield Ice Rink is open for public hockey today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $5 per player; goalies play free — thats some trade-off.

He Was Already A Pretty Hot Player: And then Jimi Hendrix took it to the next level on this date in 1967, when he doused his Fender Stratocaster with lighter fluid and set it on fire at the London Astoria. (from brainyhistory.com)
