5 Things To Know Today: March 11

Art Smart at Mohr; public skate in Smithfield; Explorer's Studio at Providence Children's Museum; it's the first Friday of Lent; and today in history: going back to the three-digit years for this one.

Art Smart: Marian J. Mohr Library hosts "Art Smart with Ms. Melyssa" today at 4 p.m. Mobile art in the style of Alexander Calder is the theme. (Click on his name for more information.) For students in grades 3 through 6.

Get Your Skate Freak On: Well, maybe not "freak," but you can practice your glide at Smithfield Ice Rink's public skate session today from 11 a..m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $3; skate rentals $5.

Explorer's Stu-Stu-Studio: A Genesis reference? Must be Friday. Providence Children's Museum hosts its Explorer's Studio drop-in program for kids 3 to 6 y/o (that's "years old" for you non-abbreviationists) from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is $8.50, though if you can snag a pass from Mohr or another local library, it's $2.

Get Your Fish & Chips: It's the first Friday of Lent; traditionally, Catholics honor the Fridays of the season by abstaining from meat — which, while it may not be solely a Rhode Island thing (see what I did there?), has evolved around these parts into folks lining up for fish & chips at local take-out places. JohnstonPatch has of Johnston dining establishments that offer the Friday fish fix.

Going Pre-Medieval On Your...: Funny that the date didn't change, what with all the revisions to the calendar over the year — or maybe it did. Well, I'll take the historians' word for it that on this date in 537, the Goths sacked Rome. (from brainyhistory.com)
