Photos: Apple Festival Pie Eating Contest

Cherry Hill Manor sponsored the competition, held on Sept. 25 at the Johnston Apple Festival.

Twenty-one brave souls brought their hunger for victory — and apple pie — but only three could be declared the winners.

Competitors in three age groups squared off at the Johnston Apple Festival's pie-eating contest, held Sept. 25 at Johnston Memorial Park.

A large crowd gathered around the stage to watch and cheer on the contestants in the event, which was sponsored by Cherry Hill Manor.

In the end, 10-year-old Damon Bedford repeated his 2010 success and won in the 9- to 13-year-old division. Kydell Haslehurst, of Pawtucket, took top honors in the 14- to 18-year-old contest, and Johnston School Committee member Susan Mansollilo fought off six adult opponents  for the victory in the final round.
