The R.I. Street Rodding Association and the United States Marine Corps teamed up for the event, held on Oct. 9 at Johnston Memorial Park.

The 36th annual Toys for Tots Fun Run car and truck show, hosted by the Rhode Island Street Rodding Association and the United States Marine Corps, took place on Oct. 9 at .

R.I. Street Rodding Association President Dave Lombari explained there was no registration fee for the car & truck show — instead, the RISRA asked participants to donate an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots organization and two canned goods to be donated to a local senior center.

"Last year the RISRA and the USMC filled two and half tons of toys in a truck from the car show," said Lombari, adding he hoped to do the same — or exceed that total — this year.

Members of the RISRA also created hand-made trophies and selected cars and trucks as winners of the custom-built trophies.

Among the classic vehicles on display was Randy Long's 1956 Chevrolet pickup truck, which he started building in 1993 for his mother who had terminal cancer.

Unfortunately, Long said, his mother never got to see the truck when it was completed in 1997.

"I'll never get rid of it," said Long, who lives in Plainfield, CT, and works in Johnston.

Bill and Kathy Hewitt brought their 1960's replica of a Model T-Ford. Originally from Roger Williams Park, the car plays the theme from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and has its own bubble-maker.

Also lending their vintage rides to the show were Ken Tracy and Debra Bellucci, who rolled up in their 1957 Oldsmobile Golden Rocket convertible; and Tom and Karen Bailey with their 1953 Porky's Bar-B-Q Ford F-100 panel van.
