Photo Gallery: Bocce At The Senior Center

There's competition and camaraderie on the bocce court.

Wednesday mornings at the mean it is time to play and learn the game of bocce, and on July 6 it was no different as members took to the outdoor court and had a friendly game of bocce.

Johnston Senior Center public relations/secretary Jude-Ann DiOrio said the center has been offering the bocce leagues for the past three years, starting in in June and running every week until the end of August.

There are four team members on two different teams and they play two games each, trying to get closest to the pallino (the small ball) with three types of throws:

  • punto, the basic throw where a player tries to get closest to the pallino;
  • raffa, where a player tries to knock another player's ball out of the way; and
  • volo, where a player tosses a ball into the air to try and move the pallino or another player's ball.

On August 12, the Johnston Senior Center bocce teams are scheduled to play a tournament against Pocassett Bay Manor.
