Mazzulla Tourney Celebrates 24 Years

The annual tournament, named after the late Daniel E. Mazzulla Sr., funds a scholarship for Johnston High School student athletes.

The 24th Annual Daniel E. Mazzulla Sr. Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament drew more than 100 golfers to Triggs Memorial Golf Course in Providence in support of a scholarship fund for student athletes.

Dan Mazzulla Jr., director of the and son of the tournament's namesake, said the idea was "the branchild of Vin LaFazia," the former parks and rec director.

"He worked for my dad, and after my dad passed away, Vin and a couple of other people came up with the idea of dedicating a golf tournament to him," Mazzulla explained. "It's a day to bring people together — and it's a perfect day for it."

With only a few clouds in the sky and temperatures in the mid-70s at the 9 a.m. tee time, Mazzulla noted that the tournament has usually had good weather.

"I can't think of one year that we were rained out," Mazzulla said.

Along with the 125 registered golfers, Mazzulla said that 50 corporate sponsors made donations to help the scholarship's budget, which stands at about $75,000.

"We're glad we're able to help out student athletes from Johnston," explained Mazzulla, who added that 2011 graduate Megan Macera, who played on the basketball and softball teams, won the most recent award. "This tournament may not go on forever, but [the fund] is self-perpetuating."

After the day on the course, the team of Deputy Police Chief David DeCesare, Ken Travelyn, and Dr. John Wade were awarded top honors for finishing 18 holes with a score of -11.
