East Providence Weather: 

  • Thursday: Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 65. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
  • Thursday Night: A chance of showers, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 53. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Toastmasters Club: The East Bay Toastmasters Club meets Thursday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 pm at 30 Alexander Ave.; it’s open to anyone who wants to improve their oral communication and leadership skills.

Family Rosary: The Knights of Columbus in Riverside host a Family Rosary on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 pm; you do not have to be a member.

5K Road Race: The East Providence Firefighters’ seventh annual Freaky 5k Road Race is set for Sunday morning, October 21st, at 10 a.m. on and around the streets of the department’s Station No. 3 in the Rumford section of the city. Entry fee is $22 the day of the race. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Sunday. This Day in History: On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward, the enthusiasticly expansionist secretary of state under PresidentAndrew Johnson.
