5K Road Race: The East Providence Firefighters’ seventh annual Freaky 5k Road Race is set for Sunday morning, October 21st, at 10 a.m. on and around the streets of the department’s Station No. 3 in the Rumford section of the city. Entry fee is $22 the day of the race. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Sunday. With its association to Halloween, tasteful costumes of all kinds can be worn by participants. This Day in History: On this day in 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward, the enthusiasticly expansionist secretary of state under PresidentAndrew Johnson.
