Five Things for Monday: Youth Basketball, Science Club & More

Johnston Weather:

  • Monday: Sunny, with a high near 48. North wind 7 to 9 mph.
  • Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 27. Northwest wind around 7 mph.

Youth Basketball: Registrations are currently being accepted for the 2012-2013 Johnston youth basketball league. The league is open to children in grades 1 – 12 (as of September 1, 2012). Team selections will take place in mid-November, and the league will run from December -March. For more information, please call the Johnston Recreation Department at 272-3460.

Kids Science Club: For kids in grades 3 through 5. Stop by the Mohr Library, 1 Memorial Avenue, Johnston Monday at 6:30 pm for fun, hands-on experiments with static electricity. Please register at the library.

This Day in History: On this day in 1994, George Foreman, age 45, becomes boxing's oldest heavyweight champion when he defeats 26-year-old Michael Moorer in the 10th round of their WBA fight in Las Vegas. More than 12,000 spectators at the MGM Grand Hotel watched Foreman dethrone Moorer, who went into the fight with a 35-0 record. Foreman dedicated his upset win to "all my buddies in the nursing home and all the guys in jail."
