Event Honors RI's Centenarians

Gov. Lincoln Chafee celebrated with 70 Rhode Islanders who have reached — or are nearing — 100 or more years of age.

It was a day to celebrate longevity, and to honor 70 Rhode Islanders who have reached or exceeded the century mark — Gov. Lincoln Chafee hosted the 35th Annual Centenarians Brunch at in Johnston on May 10.

NBC10's Mario Hilario served as master of ceremonies, and state Department of Elderly Affairs Director Catherine Taylor helped the governor distribute state citations for the men and women who'd reached 100 years of age within the last year — or are expected to celebrate their hundredth birthday soon.

Mayor Joseph Polisena also welcomed the governor to the event, which drew nearly 200 people to the Bridge's well-appointed dining room.
