Outdoor adventures at W. Alton Jones summer camps

This summer, the University of Rhode Island’s W. Alton Jones Environmental Education Center will offer campers an opportunity to enjoy hiking W. Alton Jones’ vast trail system, explore woods and wetlands, experience life on a farm or even try out more adventurous activities like rafting and rock climbing.

Immersed in 2,300 acres of pristine forests, streams, ponds, a lake, and a 19th-century farm, the West Greenwich, R.I., campus provides the perfect opportunity for children ages 5-17 to reconnect with nature.

Day campers, ages 5 to 8, can explore life on the farm at the Woodvale Farm Day Camp. At Eco-Zone Day Camp, day campers ages 8 to 11 can delve into ecology with hands-on lessons about forests, ponds and streams.

Overnight Earth Campers ages 9-13 can choose from a variety of themes that explore topics such as forest ecology, the world of water, outdoor skills and conservation.

The Teen Expeditions program for ages 12 through 17 focuses on backpacking, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and caving.

Interested campers and their parents are invited to W. Alton Jones’ summer camp open house May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the day, summer camp staff will be on-hand to answer questions, provide tours of the campus and take camp registrations. Refreshments will be provided.

Those unable to attend the open house can find complete camp offerings and registration information at www.AltonJonesCamp.org. To request a brochure, email altonjones@uri.edu or call (401) 397-3304, ext. 6043.

To reach the campus, take exit 5B off Interstate 95 and travel 2.5 miles north on Route 102.
