(Providence, Rhode Island) – Normally in the week after a presidential election, everyone would still be talking about the fallout and would be handicapping the possible candidates for the next election. But, nothing stops the normal train of thought in Washington, D.C., faster than a political scandal, and that is just what has dominated the headlines for the past ten days.
Never Forget – I did a story this week talking about the focus of news coverage. Oftentimes in a scandal – particularly a political sex scandal – the coverage zeros on the salacious details of the misbehavior, and the real issue gets lost. Ask almost anyone today what the Clinton impeachment hearings were about and they will say Monica Lewinsky. Wrong! The impeachment was for President Clinton’s perjury in a federal lawsuit involving Paula Jones. In this case, General David Petraeus and the CIA were being examined for what they knew about the fatal terrorist attacks in Libya. The fact that Petraeus’s affair with biographer Paula Broadwell surfaced has now become the center of attention with a lot of the press. Many of us need to refocus more on Libya, and less on the affair.
Minute Rice – Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham promised they would block the nomination of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to be Secretary of State. Rice famously went on TV five days after the fatal Libyan attacks and proclaimed it was all about a protest over an anti-Islamic video, when in fact the administration knew by then it was a calculated terrorist attack, likely from Al-Qaeda. In his news conference this week, President Obama angrily blasted the senators for blocking Rice, as if such a promise has never been made before. Republicans will surely bring up how Democrats planned and succeeded in blocking Robert Bork and John Tower. They keep score in Washington, D.C., and Rice’s nomination – if it happens at all – may be short-lived.
Political Viability – It may seem an odd question at this point, but can David Petraeus survive this sex scandal and become a viable political candidate someday? Some had been touting him as a GOP presidential candidate down the road. He probably could sustain a comeback. The general public is hugely forgiving, as witnessed by the comebacks of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. On the other hand, John Edwards could probably never even run for dog catcher in North Carolina, given the circumstances of his affair. So, the jury is still out on Petraeus. The fact that he immediately admitted his indiscretion and resigned is likely in his favor. He certainly has the ego and the ambition and, at age 60, is young enough to resurface someday.
Double Trouble – The oddest duo to emerge in the Petraeus scandal is the Tampa twins, Jill Kelley and her sister, Natalie Khawam. Neither is linked to Petraeus romantically, but they were everywhere in military social circles, including with Petraeus and Gen. John Allen who is running the war in Afghanistan. Kelley became the caricature of the week. Because of all her military society work, she was made an “honorary” Ambassador at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and an “honorary” Consul General to South Korea (why, we do not know). In any case, when the herd of reporters showed up outside her home this week, she called police in Tampa and in a desperate act of self-importance tried to invoke diplomatic immunity to keep the reporters at bay. It didn’t work!
Caught on Tape – You’d think after the secretly videotaped “47 percent" speech that wounded Mitt Romney during the campaign, he might choose his words more carefully. But this week he held a conference call with supporters and talked about all the “gifts” President Obama gave to certain voting constituencies, as the reason for the president’s reelection victory. Again, people recorded his call and it was leaked. Others in the GOP who aspire to higher office were mortified. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who may run for president said, “No, I think that’s absolutely wrong. We have got to stop dividing the American voters. We need to go after 100 percent of the votes, not 53 percent. We need to go after every single vote. And, secondly, we need to continue to show how our policies help every voter out there achieve the American Dream, which is to be in the middle class, which is to be able to give their children an opportunity to be able to get a great education. So, I absolutely reject that notion, that description. I think that’s absolutely wrong.” It looks like Campaign 2016 is now under way!
New England Shuffle – The opening of Secretary of State has recast the name of Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts as a possible nominee, given Susan Rice’s baggage, mentioned above. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who is termed-out and is a close friend of President Obama, is a possible pick for Attorney General or a federal judgeship. In neighboring Rhode Island, Sen. Jack Reed could be the next Secretary of Defense and independent Governor Lincoln Chafee, a close Obama ally, is also on the Cabinet short list. It’s possible all four men could be selected which would create a political scramble in Southern New England the likes of which has never been seen before. Talk about political musical chairs!
Full Circle – As I mentioned at the top, amidst all the scandal and other news, it’s important we don’t forget the four people who died in the Libyan attack. The are U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens; Sean Smith a 10-year State Department aide; Glen Doherty, a security guard and former Navy Seal; and security guard and former Navy Seal Tyrone Woods. The best way to honor them is to find out what really happened and fix it!

"Ask almost anyone today what the Clinton impeachment hearings were about and they will say Monica Lewinsky. Wrong! The impeachment was for President Clinton’s perjury in a federal lawsuit involving Paula Jones."
Let us not forget that this began as the Whitewater investigation, and took on a life of it's own, at the urging of Alphonse D'Amato and the GOP. Total cost?
$14.3M and a Congress that spent more time on TV than in chambers.
That model has been repeated, all too often, at the detriment of the Nation's business and for what?

Naome, you seem to be overlooking a few things. First, the President was impeached. Are you suggesting we, as a Country, shouldn't investigate evidence of a crime? You seem to be saying that it isn't worth $14 M to investigate Presidential criminal wrongdoing. Would you say the same about the Bush torture investigations?
As for Patreaus, he held a security clearance. In fact, given his role, he held the highest of clearances with the greatest, most sensitive need to know. Anything that compromises the integrity of a person in that position represents a real threat to national security. This was the only outcome for his actions.
As to the OP, I certainly get the impression that the focus on the scandal is a deliberate smoke and mirrors distraction. A sequnce of bad decisions, policies and actions led to the death of and Ambassador and 3 others at a critical moment in the election cycle. Misreporting started with the suggestion followed by the direct, repeated statements that this was a protest gone wrong. Then, a hearing wasn't scheduled until after the election. Then Sec. Clinton was unavailable for questioning. Then Patraeus was cauht in an affair. Etc, etc, etc. It seems like the Administration is playing on the short attention spans of most Americans while distracting us with drama fit for a soap opera.

I'm with you on the smoke and mirrors. I find the motives of those opening the investigation questionable, and likely a result of partisan maneuvering.
Given that the Starr investigations started in one venue and gained a life of it's own in another - it's suspect. Since Newt Gingrich was engaged in exactly the same indiscretions at the time of the Lewinsky charges, it's pure hypocrisy.

Obviously, you have total faith in the motives and objectives in those in power. I don't need Fox News to tell me that there are questionable things going on surrounding the Lybia incident. I know a good deal of what happened leading up to the end result. I won't bore you with the details but it was a mix of budgetary and political decisions which resulted in unintended consequences and unforseen results. That said, it is my opinion that everything that happened from the terrorist event on forward screams politically motivated distraction. Rice was given an edited press release. Obama referenced terrorism in the rose garden and then didn't mention it again for a while. The Petraeus investigation started back in May but wasn't revealed until after the election. Again, in my opinion, it was expert distraction which (in part) helped Obama secure a second term and will help him escape from any taint from the death of the Ambassador. At the same time, it destroyed a potential strong GOP candidate from ever being elected in the future. Honestly, I expect nothing different from politicians.
In this case, as I said previously, there is (was) a real, present risk of a threat to national security. You may not care, but secrets are meant to be kept. Anything that jeopardizes classified information must be taken with the utmost seriousness. That you don't seem to recognize this fact suggests your ethics are highly suspect.

The wealth of a country is its ability to manufacture and export, not a spread sheet.
That is an accountants standard.
More employment, a favorable balance of payments and the so-called debt will drop like a rock.
Secondly, the hidden fuss over Susan Rice by the Republicans is to prevent her nomination so Sen Kerry gets it and Rep Senator Scott Brown runs and gets elected to bolster the Republican roster. The rest is show-biz.
In politics you never should believe a hollow foul, you have to analyze the result.

Rags,
Most Americans seem to be fine with giving up our manufacturing base. As a country, we were told that the service economy would easily take the place of manufacturing (from the so called greatest president, Bill Clinton).
Short of the Ross Perot crowd, few understood the unintended consequences of allowing our manufacturing base to be sacrificed to other countries.
We all thought the scale would be limited to cheap Walmart products without understanding that once places like China established the foundation, an entire system of higher scale products would be the result.
China is now doing many US infrastructure projects, and floating the prefabricated pieces 6000+ miles to the US (e.g. the San Francisco to Oakland Bridge).

So let me get this straight, Naome. I pile a bunch of "coincidences" that I suggest represent an expert politically based distraction from the issues which led to the death of an ambassador. You say that it's pure conspiracy theory and equate it with Fox news. Someone suggests that the investigation is a ploy to get another Republican Senate seat and you call it plausible??? You have a very inconsistent standard of proof which just shows your entire world view is based on partisan politics and confirmation bias.
Naome Lixes
11:55 am on Thursday, November 22, 2012
@Bill - here's the quote from above:
"Secondly, the hidden fuss over Susan Rice by the Republicans is to prevent her nomination so Sen Kerry gets it and Rep Senator Scott Brown runs and gets elected to bolster the Republican roster. The rest is show-biz."
That's a reasonable prognostication, and daring in that it doesn't claim to be
a peak behind the curtain to what "really happened" but the media won't say.
I think it far more likely that Brown will run for governor, and Obama will choose another age contemporary for Secretary of State.
Equating the above with your little gem:
"Again, in my opinion, it was expert distraction which (in part) helped Obama secure a second term and will help him escape from any taint from the death of the Ambassador."
Yours just sounds like handicapping a loss, more shoulda-woulda-coulda noise.

Bill

So, again to clarify, a random supposition based entirely on baseless speculation is plausible. Meanwhile, I detail a bunch of facts which suggest to anyone with basic common sense that there are politics at work. That is conspiracy theory according to you. I'm sure that Republicans aren't going after Rice because, she gave a (now known) false statement to the world. I'm sure there is no validity to the claims that someone altered the CIA reports to sound like a terrorist assault was really just a protest gone wrong. In your world view, I sure all non-Republicans are honest and straightforward with no hidden agendas.
Naome Lixes
4:15 pm on Thursday, November 22, 2012
Let me make myself clear; this is a classic GOP ploy to obstruct the Nation's business in another pointless, partisan witch hunt - when there are serious matters before the Congress (fiscal cliff, guns in Damascus, recovery of NY/NJ).
The very idea that a couple senior, Republican senators could elevate this to dominate the upper and lower chambers, again as with Whitewater/Paula Jones/Lewinsky points to a character flaw in the Republican opposition; a willingness to bring the whole works to a halt to take down a President.
It's treasonous, and one party is liable for the shaky condition of our Republic.
You would NEVER have heard this sort of thing reach the public under Bush 43.
It only happens when Democrats hold the White House.
It happened with McCarthy, Nixon and Gingrich. It should be clear by now that if there's cloak and dagger maneuvering in the halls to make gains over the graves of Patriots - it's not Democrats skulking about.

"In my opinion, the fact that it came up now is a result of Obama attempting to scapegoat." Okay, so that's a supposition. No evidence to support it, to date.
Lots of theories, to be sure - plenty of Talk Radio lather - but no evidence.
"Again, in my opinion, it was expert distraction which (in part) helped Obama secure a second term and will help him escape from any taint from the death of the Ambassador."
I would claim that this has been flogged for political points from a purely partisan position, and forced to a headline much as with Carter and the Iranian hostages.
Compare this to the coverage given the Miami Herald story about vote manipulation
in the Florida recount. The difference is stark.
If a Democrat is in the crosshairs, pursuit is relentless.

You may disagree with it when your guy loses, but that's how it is. As to my suposition, yes it is not based on any information you've seen. Just based on common knowledge though, the relationship was going on for a year.. The investigation into harassment started in May. The affair was made public the day after the election. The Lybia hearing was scheduled to start a few days later. You have bought into the distraction. Keep in mind that the investigation is into what led up to the death of an Ambassador. It was the Obama administration and the media who pushed that to the back and the affair to the front.

We have a society that has become accustomed to the all mighty entitlement check. There is no shame anymore, no integrity. People have become accustomed to "scamming" the system instead of finding self-worth. The political powers in charge continue to rig the system for votes - wave that check for a vote. That is why even Cicilline won. What many people fail to see is this grand scheme is will eventually fail and everyone will lose and feel the pain of depression. This state, through its continued failed leadership is doomed to being a "nanny state". We have legislators that want to legalize pot, give illegals the write to drive, which in the end will end up giving them the right to vote and disenfranchise the legals and natural born citizens of this state. This is the permissiveness that rots societies. What people fail or refuse to recognize is that government is not the panacea everyone thinks it is - it is not their roll. Government tends to screw everything up and now people want to ruin the healthcare system with Obamacare. You will see more layoffs, cutbacks or even closures of businesses. When business owners feel they are no longer able to make a profit, they will close up and leave. We have that first hand in this state and it will continue to happen across this country. There is no such thing as a free lunch - someone has to pay for it and those numbers are declining. We are going the way of Greece and it will be painful.

My theory; this smoke and mirrors on Benghazi and the Rice debacle. She was thrown under the bus in order to have a scape goat to confuse the issue that still is un-answered to this day. As for her nomination, it was thrown out there to also change the subject from Benghazi and keep it out of the media even longer. She never would have had a chance to pass the nomination process, so it was logical to float her name.
John Kerry was and will be the choice, because they owe him, he was the foil for the debate prep in the so called room the NL said Obama would never be caught with Kerry. He has no problem with the nomination process because he knows all the skeletons of the nomination committee and the Administration. Not to mention a blind follower. The committee also knows he will be a fool in the position and screw it up to no end. That is political coup for the GOP. I agree the GOP sees his seat as a possibility for Brown who is about as RINO as the get though. Let’s face it Kerry is not a darling since his lose to Bush. Not to mention his 1% image.
Anyone with half a brain could see this obvious plan in my opinion anyway. ;-}

Fox News is not the same as its pundit arm of The 5, Oreilly, Hannity Susturn etc.
One thing not in dispute for me is the Adminstration is either lying on this issue or holding back for political reasons. That is an issult and disgusting to those brave Americans who died in this terrorist attack as well as the attack at Fort Hood which Obama still calls workplace violence. Disgusting also. Just my opinion anyway.
Must we rehash this? If your opinion isn't original, it doesn't deserve consideration.
Patriots died serving their country in a foreign land - they deserve better than to be made a political talking point by armchair warriors like us (LeaveRI, excluded).

Please, your making a mockery out of this site.
Really.
Responding to posts that have nothing to do with the Original Post, or taking blowhards to task is mockery? What's YOUR definition?
I would claim that the opposite holds true: regular posters like Govstench,
no regr allia b, Joe Sousa and others have a light grasp on reality which they regularly illustrate here. It's a public forum; they're free to express their opinions, I'm free to point out the falsehoods contained within.
It's a circle of life thing. This country ground to a halt when people espousing just this sort of half-baked conspiratorial fantasy got elected to the House.
Look what happens, when people sit on the sidelines and allow this sort of thing to dominate the airwaves - you get the mess in New Hampshire that will divide friends and families for decades.
I'll stop refutation when the submissions no longer insult my intelligence.
I'm not very sharp, so that bar is set pretty low.
mockery: 4. A false, derisive, or impudent imitation:

One of the things that stick out in my mind is the Author seems to think Communism could work . The problem is in the people as Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolute. The people of Russia believed because things were so bad for them. It wasn't long before the new Government was shown to be as bad as the previous. Two classes evolved the haves, and the have knots . So much of this reminds me of what we see in America today. The Candy Man passing out the goods so people follow him. Running up debt with no way to pay it. The Russians invaded other countries in Europe and began to strip their wealth and resources. They left behind pouted cities broken and penniless. With no industry the USSR became insolvent. They had little to sell to foreign markets so their currency devalued. This also reminds me of America as our factories close leaving for foreign soils . History repeats itself when people don't have knowledge of it.
The 50% that appose this move toward a Socialistic Government are the Informed . They see the writing on the wall. God Bless America and our Constitution.

Naome-Please don't take offense to this, but attempting to debate with Joe Sousa is not much different than attempting to debate with a dyslexic chimpanzee.
If you check Joe's educational background, you won't find any masters degrees in economics, Rhodes Scholarships, or Nobel Peace Prizes in his curriculum vitae. In Joe's view, changing the oil on diesel trucks in the army and engaging in loud outbursts at town council meetings are the only qualifications needed to be a so called expert in economics, government affairs, and world history.

The media is the culprit when it comes to extremism . They come to a Tea Party rallies and find the most extreme person to show on the news. I have been to many rallies and the bulk of these people only want our country to succeed. Stop the spending of our children's future. $ 16TRILLION AND GROWING Stop the jobs from leaving our shores. NAFTA & WTO I never heard any one push Religion or Life style issues at these rallies. The media created these perceptions. The Tea Party embraces the Constitutions and Bill of Rights. 'All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness. "They come to a Tea Party rallies and find the most extreme person to show on the news. I have been to many rallies and the bulk of these people only want our country to succeed. Stop the spending of our children's future."
So says the childless, middle-aged man that ran for Tiverton School committee
on a platform of "ICFAT".
Let's call the Tea party what it is - well-off older people that don't see the benefit of public services that THEY don't use. You're about your property taxes, Joe.
You lot are the Moral Majority in a Tri-cornered hat.
Nothing more.
" What the Beltway media have failed to understand is that there are two Tea Parties: there's the "Astroturf Tea Party", the well-funded machine pushing a message of absolute rejection of all social spending; and then there's the grassroots Tea Party, the everyday conservatives who actually show up at rallies, who demand to see the president's birth certificate, and who oppose government spending while also demanding that no one touch their Medicare. Those folks are the voters, and Republicans know they must be fed. And those folks aren't opposed to the religious right, since they are, to a large extent, the same as the religious right."

Maybe, just maybe - the approach you advocate is bankrupt like the former CCCP.

Mr. Sousa-Here's some advice for you: Instead of banging your head against the wall here in Rhode Island with your right wing, extremist, teabagger views, why don't you move to some small hillbilly town in South Carolina, Florida, or Texas, where you would be welcomed with open arms. There are plenty of those redneck havens where everyone wears camouflage clothing 365 days per year, everyone carries a gun, and the average educational level is second grade dropout. Heck, they would probably make you mayor of one of those podunk towns without even having an election. It would be paradise for you!
So what do you say Joe? Isn't it time for you to load up all your camo underoos and the Mrs. on the back of your "bikerhd1998" and hit the road for greener pastures? You'll be doing both yourself and the people of Rhode Island a favor.
