What Would You Put Here — 663 Killingly Street
In a new feature, we take a look at vacant properties around Johnston — and ask you what could go there.
From Atwood and Hartford Avenues to Killingly Street and Plainfield Pike, Johnston has its fair share of vacant buildings. Some have been empty for years while others see a rotating crop of businesses.
But, if it were up to you, what would you like to see happen to these buildings? Each week, we'll feature one empty building, lot or area in Johnston and ask our readers what they'd like to see there.
This Week's Property:
Address: 663 Killingly Street (next to Johna's Restaurant)
History: A former location for Axelrod Music, this 6,700-sq ft. commercial space was built in 1984 and hosted several businesses during its occupancy, including a 44 Fitness.
Ownership: The Town of Johnston online Assessor's Database lists the current owner as National Development Group Inc.
Status: This building is currently vacant, with no agent found in an online search.

I remember 663 Killingly St when it was a Rite Aid Pharmacy...a true asset to the community. Unfortunately we have given way to the superstore mentality and pharmacies have now located on the major thruways throughout communities. The building is too big for local retail shops, etc. Perhaps National Development Group, a major real estate holder and developer located here in Johnston, may be willing to subdivide the space which would then be a little more affordable to potential rentors.

Hi Joe:
Thanks for the insight into the history of this property — and the state of development in Johnston.
I agree with you — it will likely take some creative thinking to figure out how this building can best be used.

I think a nice under 21 club. The kids in Johnston have nothing to do. Serve soda ,water and lemonade. CARD only under 21. Have police present at door. With a partner and some imagination it might work.
