National Handwashing Awareness Week Begins Today
Local health insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI issued tips and reminders for how to properly wash one's hands to avoid getting sick.
Did you know that it's National Handwashing Awareness Week?
Starting today and running through Dec. 10, the federal Centers for Disease Control and local health providers like Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI are getting the word out about how to properly wash one's hands.
(If you or someone you know may be sick with a cold or the flu, be sure to check in at a medical facility, like Atmed Treatment Center of Johnston.)
In a press release, BCBSRI offered the following information:
Proper handwashing techniques:
- Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply soap.
- Rub your hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Scrub all surfaces, including between your fingers and under your fingernails.
- Rinse all the soap off.
- Dry your hands thoroughly with a towel.
- Use a towel to turn off the faucet.
Remember, it’s especially important to wash your hands:
- After coughing or sneezing (if you covered your nose or mouth with your hand).
- Before, during, and after you prepare food.
- Before you eat.
- After you use the bathroom.
- When your hands are dirty.
- More frequently when someone you live with is sick.
