Johnston Schools Draft Budget, Fiscal 2013
The Johnston School Committee is scheduled to hold a second budget workshop on its fiscal 2013 budget proposal on Tuesday night, Mar. 20, at 6 p.m.
Tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Ferri Middle School, the Johnston School Committee is scheduled to hold its second budget workshop on its proposed $49.52 million spending plan for fiscal 2013.
The draft budget presented at the first budget workshop, held Mar. 15, is attached to this article.
Supt. Dr. Bernard DiLullo conducted a line-by-line review of the budget last Thursday, and committee members decided to withhold any suggestions for cuts in the spending plan.
According to the budget document released by the school administration, the fiscal 2013 proposal currently seeks an additional $585,000 from the town, and an increase of about $533,000 from the state.
Mayor Joseph Polisena has stated that he hopes to hold all town departments — including the school department — to level-funding, leaving committee members seeking ways to trim their spending proposal.
Salaries and benefits for teachers and staff make up about $38.3 million, or roughly 77 percent, of the budget proposal.
After about 90 minutes of discussion on the budget last Thursday, Chairwoman Janice Mele recessed the meeting and suggested that committee members review the budget and identify possible cuts that can be recommended tomorrow night.
