HS Sports: Cougars Bounced From Playoffs

Mt. Hope swept the local co-op varsity hockey squad over the weekend, avenging last year's loss to the Cougars that earned JNP the Division III championship.

The Johnston-North Providence varsity hockey team won't be repeating as Division III champions this year, after the Mt. Hope Huskies swept the Cougars in the semifinals, 5-4 on Mar. 9 and 7-2 on Mar. 10, the Providence Journal reported.

Jonathan Alsfeld and Robert Tonucci each scored two goals and an assist, and senior goalie Matther Domaingue stopped 50 shots during the series for the Cougars, but the JNP squad couldn't withstand the offensive power of the Huskies, who scored five goals in the second period of each game.

Last year, JNP swept the Bristol team in the D-III finals for the state championship. The two squads split this year's regular season series, with each team scoring a 3-0 shutout against the other.

The Cougars finished their title-defending season with a 14-2 record, good for first overall in Division III, after starting the campaign with 11 straight wins.

East Providence, which swept Tolman in the other semifinal series, handed the Cougars their first loss on Feb. 4.

The Townies now proceed to the title series against Mt. Hope, set to start Thursday night at Schneider Arena on the campus of Providence College.

Editor's Note: Many, many thanks to Coleen Langevin Fournier, who provided JohnstonPatch with photos from several of this year's JNP games, and who has been a tireless supporter of her son and his teammates on the Cougar team.
