The field at the town's soccer complex, damaged by two Johnston men allegedly driving their vehicles over the turf, won't be ready for the town's soccer leagues to use until later this year, Parks and Recreation Director Dan Mazzulla said during a recent phone interview.
"Right now, we're looking at the fall to reopen the field," Mazzulla explained, adding he's awaiting bids from turf companies for the repair work, which will require complete removal of the old sod and installation of a new layer of grass. "We don't want to take any chances with a kid getting hurt on an uneven surface."
The new sod will need time to take root, and the sprinkler system at the soccer complex — which was also dug up by the vehicles driving over it — will need to be repaired, Mazzulla explained.
In the meantime, Mazzulla added, local organizers are "looking at the schedule to see what we can move around and maybe use the high school football field" for at least some of the spring soccer games.
Raymond Zinno and Costanzo Caparrelli, both 18, stand accused of driving their vehicles onto the field at the soccer complex on the nights of Mar. 2 and 3, digging up turf and leaving stretches of bare earth behind.
A surveillance camera at the soccer complex recorded two vehicles — one an Isuzu SUV, the other a Subaru passenger car — being driven around the field in a circular pattern, causing the damage.
Mayor Joseph Polisena has estimated the cost of repairing the damage at more than $15,000.
Zinno is scheduled to appear for arraignment tomorrow in Third District Court, Warwick. Caparrelli is attending college out of state, and Police Chief Richard S. Tamburini said during a press conference last week that he expects Caparrelli to turn himself into police when he returns in April.
