Bites Nearby: Brewed Awakenings

Every week, we'll take a look at a locally-owned eatery.

Two is better than one seems to be the philosophy at Brewed Awakenings. Two locations, less than a half-mile apart on Atwood Avenue, serve up some of the finest coffee this sleepy-eyed reviewer has ever had.

I am a creature of habit, so I went to the Brewed I have been going to for over 11 years, at 1395 Atwood Ave. The other location is near the Johnston High School and Johnston Police Station at 1577 Atwood Ave.

Promptly greeted by a perky and persistently pleasant cashier, my order was taken with a smile and a “Hi, how are you?” I was slightly disappointed that they did not have my favorite roast of coffee on tap today, but the cashier immediately said it was not a problem and she would brew it fresh for me – bonus points!

Since I was not overwhelmingly hungry today, I settled for something light: a hot cup of coffee, $1.85 and an egg and cheddar on a croissant, $3.20.

I sat down at my table and before I could even check my e-mail, my coffee and croissant sandwich were brought over.

A hot, light and flaky French croissant with just the right amount of melted cheddar complimented an over-medium egg – the sandwich never stood a chance.

The coffee – well, how could you go wrong? Kona roast, with cream and sugar, I can feel the good-time caffeinated jitters coming on.

Brewed Awakenings is worth a visit for your morning, afternoon or evening fix of just about anything caffeinated.

Other notables:

  • Brewed has a great amount of fresh pastries and muffins that are sure to please the most picky palette.
  • The coffee house can get busy and loud. If you plan to study here, bring some headphones to drown out conversation that may be distracting.
  • Comfortable and much-desired leather chairs are the best spots to settle in and relax with your coffee.

Total bill for one – one small coffee and an egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant:

$5.05 + 20-percent tip = $6.06
